Goodwill Indy Lead Teacher, Children’s Learning Center - Clarksville in Clarksville, Indiana


Under direct supervision, the successful Lead Teacher establishes and maintains a safe, healthy, nurturing, and educational environment: plans and implements daily classroom activities in accordance with program philosophy and guidelines; assists with training of new staff; supervises and guides staff assigned to age group. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function below satisfactorily.   • Represent Goodwill in a positive, pleasant manner by providing excellent customer service at all times. Serve as role model and adhere to Agency guidelines. Handle requests and concerns in a friendly, fair and impartial manner. Support the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Establish and maintain a safe, healthy, nurturing, and educational classroom environment to facilitate growth and development and promote self-esteem; maintain child to adult ratio per state licensing requirements; use developmentally appropriate practices when working with children directly.

  • Prepare weekly lesson plans using Creative Curriculum, submit plans to Curriculum and Training Coordinator for review; implement plans after review and/or approval; develop individual goals for each child; observe and assess children on an ongoing basis; document observations about each child’s development monthly; share appropriate information with staff to ensure each child’s continuity of care.

  • Maintain parent communication through parent projects, newsletters, weekly notes, daily notes, and telephone calls; facilitate parent-teacher conferences twice annually.

  • Ensure that all paperwork is completed in an accurate and timely manner; ensure classroom binders (attendance and child records) are current; ensure CACFP attendance records and meal counts are recorded at the point of service; maintain confidentiality of information related to children and their families, operations, financial matters and personnel issues.

  • Ensure safety and security of facilities and Goodwill BridgePointe assets; effectively handle workplace incidents by obtaining appropriate medical treatment for injured children, parents and employees; report known or suspected safety and loss prevention problems promptly and according to procedure.

  • Ensure all work and play areas, including toys and other objects that children use, are kept clean and free of clutter; maintain supplies, equipment, and materials in a responsible manner; ensure the order of arrangement, appearance, décor, and learning environment of the center.

  • Assist with the orientation of new employees, trainees, and volunteers; provide general supervision of assigned Teaching Assistants; provide Teaching Assistants with updates from Lead Teacher meetings.

  • Administer prescription medications that are supplied by parents when parents have provided a copy of the prescription, signed a written consent and a waiver form, and have documented exact times and dosage for medication to be administered to their child; provide minor, minimally invasive procedures (i.e. catheterization, etc.) as required when parents have provided the materials, signed a written consent and a waiver form, and have documented exact or applicable times procedures should be administered.

  • Attend and participate in regular child care meetings and training sessions as scheduled.

  • Cooperatively participate in shared responsibilities; assist with backup coverage and perform other related duties as assigned, requested or required.


  • A current CDA credential; or a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education; or a Bachelor’s degree with at least fifteen (15) college credit hours relating to Early Childhood Education; or enrolled in a program within one (1) year of hire and successfully completing six (6) credit hours per year.

  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age.

  • At least one (1) year experience working with children birth to 6 years old, preferably in a classroom setting.

  • Must be able to accommodate the operational schedule of the Children’s Learning Center.

  • Successful completion of pre-employment background investigation, including periodic drug screening, physicals and yearly TB tests.

  • Successful completion of all applicable training requirements: new hire training manual and checklist; twenty-four (24) hours of annual child development training; annual training on medication, universal precautions, and food program; CPR and first aid certification.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to speak persuasively to a variety of audiences, especially children; ability to foster a strong team atmosphere.

  • Strong leadership skills; demonstrated ability to lead people and get results; high energy motivator.

  • Ability to follow instructions and comply with policies & procedures; ability to read, analyze and interpret instructions and documents relating to child care.

  • Ability to complete reports accurately as assigned; ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

  • Ability to promote a safe working environment and to ensure that all safety procedures are followed.

  • Ability to create a work environment that embraces, appreciates and fosters diversity.

  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds unassisted.
