Community Health Systems Regional Chief Operating Officer - Lutheran Health Network (Fort Wayne, IN) in Fort Wayne, Indiana


Under the direction of the Regional President, the Regional Chief Operating Officer has operational responsibility for the Hospitals within their defined market or region. This includes advising, directing, coordinating and controlling the overall operations of the acute care hospitals in a market or region.

  1. Responsible for overall operations of the acute-care facilities within defined market or region.

  2. Manage costs by continually seeking data that will identify opportunities and take action to eliminate non-value costs in conjunction with the Hospitals Chief Financial Officers and Chief Nursing Officers.

  3. Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired concerning the personal, financial, medical or employment status of patients of the Hospitals and their families.

  4. Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and Hospitals.

  5. Work with system management to develop and implement policies and procedures, short- and long-range goals, objectives and plans.

  6. Provide leadership to the Network and Hospitals executive leadership teams that will enroll support, create ownership of goals, and encourage active participation in decisions that impact the Hospitals.

  7. Ensure the Hospitals meet necessary regulatory and compliance approvals and quality accreditations in conjunction with the Hospitals Chief Nursing Officers.

  8. Partner with the Regional President to attract physicians who use, or will use, the Hospitals; taking a leadership role in the recruiting and retention of physicians.

  9. Assist in the execution of new services that generate additional sources of profitable revenue and identifying capital expenditures.

  10. Assist the Hospitals CEO s in identifying measurable results and set strategies to create effective Business Plans.

  11. Monitor the progress of the Hospitals CEO s to assure desired progress in achieving specific goals.

  12. Maintain review of the Hospitals financial position and advise on corrective action if needed.

  13. Assist the Hospitals CEO s with strategies for building stronger relationships with the medical staff.

  14. Provide suggestions on how to approach difficult problems with individual physicians.

  15. Work with individual CEO s to review performance, strengths and weaknesses and provide counsel on improvement.

  16. Suggest additional training/skills/knowledge that will assist the CEO s in career growth.

  17. Assist the Regional President with the selection and hiring of CEO s and CEO Bench strength: COOs, Assistant CEOs, and MHA/MBA Graduates.

  18. Serve as interim CEO as needed in order to assess the needs of the facilities and to allow time to recruit a permanent replacement.

  19. Create an environment that will encourage the recruiting and retention of qualified Hospital employees.

  20. Develop and maintain positive relations with local community as well as the community leaders.

  21. Analyze areas in planning, promoting and conducting organization-wide performance improvement activities.

  22. Represent Network and Hospitals at meetings including medical staff, hospital board of director meetings as well as relevant community meetings; participate with leaders in designing and providing patient care and services.

  23. Participate in the Hospitals monthly operation reviews as well as participating in corporate office meetings as deemed necessary.

  24. Maintain an awareness of changes in healthcare matters that could have an impact on the financial success of the Hospitals through continuing education, participation in corporate training and development, and an effective program of personal growth.

A Master s degree in hospital administration and / or business administration. A minimum of 8 years experience of demonstrated successful leadership in an acute healthcare facility, which includes but is not limited to: building relationships with board members, physicians, hospital employees, and community; growing hospital revenue to meet budgetary goals and objectives; and meeting necessary regulatory and compliance approvals and quality accreditations. Multi-site healthcare management experience preferred. Proprietary Hospital CEO or COO experience preferred.
