Lilly Post Doctoral Scientist-Materials Engineer in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Delivery, Device and Connected Solutions (DDCS) organization within Eli Lilly and Company supports the design, development, and commercialization of drug products and pharmaceutical delivery systems including medical devices and container closure systems. The Materials Engineering team of DDCS provides value to the organization by providing materials selection and engineering support to Lilly’s existing and novel delivery device and packaging portfolio from advanced development through commercialization.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute materials engineering expertise to product development projects (ranging from early innovation through commercialization) to ensure safe and reliable device performance. Specific topics include materials selection, structure-processing-property relationships, method development for materials screening, polymer analysis, polymer processing, troubleshooting material failures, polymer durability.

  • Effectively coordinate engineering recommendations with cross-functional teammates.

  • Characterize and evaluate novel polymeric materials, pressure-sensitive adhesives, coatings. Examples include renewable (bio-based) materials, coatings for electronics, elastomers, and wearable adhesives.

  • Execute a wide variety of experimental plans with internal and external resources.

  • Document results and conclusions in lab notebooks and technical reports.

  • Enhance Lilly’s competitive advantage through development of proprietary knowledge.

  • Presents technical information on projects, e.g. internal seminars or meetings.

  • Support failure analysis investigations on components, sub-assemblies and/or complete devices.

  • May represent department or company in interactions with internal and external committees or regulators, presentations, publications or other professional activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or relevant area of study

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • In-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of materials science and engineering with a focus on polymers, adhesives and coatings.

  • Experience in polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion) and structure-property-processing relationships preferred.

  • Hands-on experience in polymer analysis (thermal, chemical, mechanical, rheological and surface analysis techniques).

  • Expertise in the areas of characterization of adhesives and coatings.

  • Knowledge of relevant material characteristics and their implications to applications.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary environment.

  • Problem solving and decision making skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Additional Information:

  • Travel may be required, usually 10-20% within US and OUS.

  • This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed term position up to a maximum of 4 years.
