Full Time Days

Shift Details: 3 / 12 hour shifts 9:30 am - 10:00 pm, every other Friday commitment. No scheduled weekends or holidays, but does include some on call time on weekends (24hr per call shift, rotation approximately every 6weeks), & holidays (12hr call shift, approximately 2 per year).

Preferences / Requirements: Min of 2yrs experience in PACU, Critical Care, &/or Emergency Room required in an acute care facility. ACLS & PALS required. Prefer NIHSS certification and experience, or obtaining certification by end of orientation period.

Who we are…..

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is within Ascension St. Vincent Hospital on West 86th St. We provide post-surgical and anesthesia care to both outpatients and inpatients following a variety of surgeries and procedures. Care is provided for the adult patient population, but does not exclude care for pediatric patients when necessary. We care for patients with a variety of acuity levels and age ranges. including critical care patients. We care for pediatric patients after hours and on the weekends. We are committed to providing an excellent surgical experience, thereby allowing for an easier and less stressful stay for patients and their caregivers.

As an RN in the area, you will provide direct nursing care and support for post-operative patients. This recovery phase of the surgical experience extends from the time the patient is transferred out of the operating room, until they successfully meet discharge criteria. At that point, patients either proceed to an Inpatient status or Phase II recovery where they are discharged home. Expectations are that careful assessments and immediate interventions are provided while assisting patients to recover quickly, safely, and as comfortably as possible.

What we do…..

  • Provide direct nursing care for patients in the post-operative period

  • Support and educate patients and families regarding their procedure and plan of care

  • Evaluate patient responses to treatments and interventions

  • Monitor, record, and communicate patient conditions as appropriate throughout the PACU recovery

  • Work collaboratively with team members

  • Follow guidelines of care according to the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)

    Additional information…..

  • Excellent multi-tasking skills, communication skills, and a desire to provide excellent customer service are necessary.

  • Flexibility in scheduling is expected. Kronos scheduling is utilized in 6 week increments. Some degree of self scheduling is allowed while also following department guidelines, such as every other Friday scheduling practices.

  • The Main PACU operates 24hours/day, 7days/week. Some weekend and holiday on-call time is required.

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, are all required to be kept current. It is preferred to have NIHSS certification current as well.

What You Will Do

Deliver professional nursing care in the operative setting to patients undergoing surgical or other invasive procedures.

  • Perform scrub functions including the selection and handling of instruments and supplies used during procedure.

  • Perform circulating functions including monitoring, recording and communicating patient condition and managing overall nursing care of patient before, during and after procedure.

  • Directly assist operating physician with surgical tasks including hemostasis, suturing and wound exposure as well as patient positioning.

  • Prepare operating rooms and surgical instruments and equipment for use.

What You Will Need

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • Registered Nurse credentialed from the Indiana Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

One or more of the following required:

  • Advanced Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

  • BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

Education:

  • Diploma from an accredited school/college of nursing required.
